The storm sewer system is separate from the sanitary sewer system. Specifically, the storm sewer system is designed to drain the water from the roads, sidewalks, and other surfaces that fall as part of precipitation during rainstorms. This water on the surface is collectively known as runoff. Runoff enters into the storm sewer system via drop inlets and curb inlets in the street and drops down into another network of subsurface pipes, known as the storm sewer system.
