On October 17th, 2018 the federal government legalized recreational (non-medical) cannabis. Provincial and municipal governments are required to implement Federal legislation. The Village of McBride has temporarily banned all sales of cannabis within the community until a public input process is complete.
This fall the Village will work with consultants to conduct a community survey and best practices review in order to inform the development of a McBride regulatory approach to cannabis sales and production within the community. This includes land use planning decisions (i.e. where recreational cannabis retail locations may be located in the community), business licensing (i.e. specifying local business license conditions, such as operating hours) and production of cannabis (i.e. where cannabis can be produced commercially in the community).
While the majority of recreational cannabis regulations are within the jurisdictions of the Federal and Provincial governments, the Village of McBride does have an important role to play in setting the rules and processes to govern where recreational cannabis is sold and/or produced in the Village.
